Greenland

According to historical accounts, in 985 AD there was a Norse outlaw known as Erik the Red. In order to recruit more sailors to join his escape, he told the Vikings in Iceland about a fertile island to the north—a legendary green land rich in resources—what we now know as Greenland, the “green land,” and the home of Santa Claus in popular imagination.

Surprisingly, the lie worked. More than 4,000 Vikings set sail northwest in search of this fabled land, marking one of the earliest Norse migrations to Greenland. But when they finally arrived, they realized Erik the Red had deceived them: the island was covered in ice and snow, with no green vegetation in sight.

Ironically, in recent years, global warming has caused Greenland’s ice sheets to gradually recede, allowing grass and trees to appear, while the habitats of polar bears and other Arctic animals have become increasingly endangered. More than a thousand years later, Greenland may truly become a green land.

The design features a Viking ship discovering a new world, symbolizing abundance and a safe arrival in harbor. On both sides are magical Norse runic wheels, paired with a compass used to search for the legendary Tree of Life, expressing the idea of endless vitality.
In addition, the raven is the messenger of Odin in Norse mythology. When a ship was within about 300 kilometers of land, sailors would release a raven and follow its flight path to find the shore.

When FLIPPOS Socks are flipped down, an Arctic wolf appears to represent Greenland. As one of the world’s ancient species and a survivor of the Ice Age, the Arctic wolf symbolizes solitary survival and resilience, echoing the spirit of the Tree of Life.
