Navajo Code continues to use the classic American Indian design of Mohicans, but this time the main color is turquoise. Turquoise the stone is a sacred object for American Indians, especially the Navajo for whom turquoise is the spirit of the blue sky and the sea, and a symbol of divine power. They will wear turquoise adornments on the body to pray for wealth and long life.
In addition, and different to the Mohicans design, the wings on the flipside are replaced by the eagle totem symbolizing the US military in World War II. This expresses how an ethnic minority group can still retain their cultural traditions within mainstream society and make their contribution to the world.

The Navajo Nation is one of the largest Indigenous peoples in North America and is home to the largest Native American reservation in the United States. The Navajo people have their own distinct language and culture, and because of the complexity of the Navajo language, it was famously used as the basis for a military code during World War II.
During the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945, Navajo Code Talkers were recruited by the U.S. military to transmit critical battlefield information using coded messages based on the Navajo language. Their speed, accuracy, and secrecy made an important contribution to U.S. military communications during the campaign. Their story later inspired the Hollywood film Windtalkers, directed by Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo.
One Navajo veteran who served during the war recalled: “We used our own language to fight for our country during World War II, and we were proud of it.”

Another key difference from the Mohicans design appears after the socks are flipped down. Instead of wings, the design reveals an eagle motif associated with the U.S. military during World War II. It represents the idea that minority communities can preserve their own cultural identity while continuing to contribute to the wider society around them.
