During the battle for Iwo Jima in 1945 in particular, the US military turned especially to Navajo troops to use their language to accurately convey information in secret, and they became the greatest heroes of the assault on the island. This is the story told by Hong Kong director John Woo in the Hollywood movie Windtalkers.
Navajo who took part in the battle have spoken of the pride they felt in using their mother language to serve their country in World War II.
