[Whale Rider (Te Kaieke Tohorā) MCP]
An ancient myth circulates among the Māori tribes of New Zealand, telling of how the ancestors of the Māori were led by whales through storms to reach New Zealand. Therefore, whales represent a spiritual emblem, a symbol of strength and tradition.
Whale Rider (Te Kaieke Tohorā) is a famous novel that was later adapted into a film and won multiple international awards. The story follows a young girl named Paikea in a patriarchal society where men are valued over women. Due to her gender, despite her strong abilities, she cannot inherit the position of leader. However, she later discovers that she has inherited her ancestors' ability to communicate with whales and guides a beached whale back to the sea, thereby changing the chieftain's deeply ingrained traditional beliefs.
The story concludes with Paikea helping the whale return to its homeland, just as the whales originally brought her people to land, embodying concepts of inheritance and ecological sustainability. It also illustrates that even traditions like preferring sons over daughters are human creations, and a change in mindset can turn destiny around.
[The Dalit - Mandala MCP]
The caste system is an ancient social hierarchy, with the most representative example being India's caste culture, which is built upon the Hindu concept of reincarnation. The caste system comprises four main castes, dividing Indians into Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (farmers/merchants), and Shudras (servants/laborers) based on their hierarchical status. There are significant differences in marriage, justice, social welfare, and status depending on one's caste.
After India gained independence from British colonial rule in 1947, the caste system was officially abolished by law, making discrimination based on caste illegal. However, its influence can still be observed in daily life. Despite multiple changes in government and two Dalit presidents, the Indian government continues to strive for democracy and human rights equality to overturn the deeply entrenched caste system in the minds of most Indians.

#FlipSocksDesign
[Whale Rider MCP]
The design interprets the diversity of marine life using the style of traditional Māori Moko patterns. The composition starts with a whale's tail, with the manta ray in the middle symbolizing the whale rider, as manta rays are considered spirit protectors in Māori culture, like large cloaks. The sea turtle in the background represents love and peace, while the whales leaping out of the water on both sides appear as if the whale rider is silently guarding the ocean.
Since Māori people regard the sea as their home and rely on fishing for their livelihood, they wear Hei Matau (fish hook) necklaces. The inclusion of the fish hook design expresses the hope that whoever wears these socks will have good luck.
When the socks are flipped inside out, we incorporate the unique Māori art of Raranga (weaving). Raranga holds significant importance in Māori culture, with Māori people using over 50 different types of Harakeke (New Zealand flax) to create traditional clothing, ornaments, artworks, or baskets for carrying fish. Here, we aim to convey the meaning of a plentiful catch and a bountiful harvest.
[The Dalit - Mandala MCP]
The inspiration comes from traditional Indian henna (Mehendi in Hindi), which refers to the henna plant. It spread from Egypt to the Middle East five thousand years ago and then to India, becoming a symbol of auspiciousness and blessings, and an indispensable part of traditional Indian festivals and weddings. In early India, henna was applied by people of lower castes for those of higher status, but with changing times, henna has transformed into an art that anyone can learn, regardless of age or profession.
The overall design is inspired by the concrete image of Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom. Elements include the Mandala, found in traditional patterns, which signifies the center of all things and the symbol of the entire universe. FLIPPOS deeply believes that human beliefs originate from thought. Therefore, we incorporated the Sahasrara (crown chakra), which activates wisdom and increases thinking power, into the imagery, paired with Ganesha's lotus seat, which means to maintain a pure heart and that gratitude brings happiness. When the socks are flipped inside out, we transform the original light color into the main body, symbolizing henna painted on our skin, spiritually and psychologically empowering us with energy, joy, and good luck.
