Hayao Miyazaki’s film Princess Mononoke tells the story of Ashitaka, who journeys to a polluted forest in search of a cure to lift his curse. The inspiration comes from a breathtaking photograph of a Formosan sambar deer taken on Qilai Mountain, one of Taiwan’s 100 Peaks. Surrounded by lush greenery, layered mountain ridges, and mist drifting like a dreamscape, the deer appears almost otherworldly—like the Shishigami descending from Princess Mononoke.
